  • Welcome to the Willow Hill Music Room!

    TCAPS Music Department Philosophy

The arts, the universal expression of our common humanity, are essential to living a full life. Music education provides unique experiences which cultivate the learner’s emotional and intellectual well-being, develop music literacy and bring about working toward a common goal.

      Belief Statements

     We believe that…

…the arts keep us human in an increasingly technological world.

…all people are innately musical; therefore schools have an obligation to help each student develop his/her potential.

…music is an expression of society, therefore it helps us understand and appreciate our own and other cultures.

…music is a discipline with its own intrinsic value.  By its very nature it is an embodiment of many other disciplines.

…music education addresses all learning styles and develops higher order thinking skills.

…a balanced music education program must include opportunities in general music, choral music, band and orchestra.

We believe that every child can learn to sing and that the singing voice is the foundation of the child's musical development. Everyone deserves to be able to sing for their own pleasure-to experience the musical self-confidence and life-long joy that singing can bring. (from TCAPS K-5 Music Standards)

Enjoy these wonderful folk songs!  Listen, sing along, and practice using your singing voice!

    • Classical Listening

We believe that there is a profound connection between music and emotional life. Listening to great music allows students to develop these connections, and the sensitivity which keeps us human. (From TCAPS K-5  Music Standards)

Enjoy some examples of great music, and learn more about three famous composers!

    • Music Literacy

We believe that understanding the language of music is essential to the development of musical competence and independence. (from TCAPS K-5 Music Standards)

Practice reading the following rhythm patterns and perform them for your parents!

    • Movement and Dance

We believe that movement is innate in all children, that rhythmic movement is an important means through which musical understanding can be gained, and that students need the opportunity to become aware of and develop the expressive possibilities of movement. (from TCAPS K-5 Music Standards)

    • Playing Classroom Instruments

We believe that playing instruments enhances the aesthetic experience in music. It provides children of all skill levels a kinesthetic avenue of musical expression which encourages self-discipline, independence, and stimulates artistic creativity. (from TCAPS K-5 Music Standards)

Throughout a child's music education at Willow Hill, they will have opportunities to play various classroom percussion instruments, barred percussion, and recorders.
