      Welcome to Mrs. McGrew's Class!

  The purpose of this site is to help students and parents keep up to date on what we are studying in the classroom and to provide information on other classroom events and learning opportunities. I hope this will improve communication between the classroom and home and provide parents with a resource to help support their student's learning.   Language Arts                 

  8/30/13: The first several weeks will establish the routines we will use all year for reading and writing. We have a reading block and a writing block every day where students will read and connect to texts, both fiction and non-fiction, through daily routines. As a result they will become independent learners. They will explore their creative side by writing narratives, reports, a biography, and fantasy writing. Students will write in all subject areas, but will learn to improve as writers through  the writer's workshop. We will begin the year reviewing the parts of speech, punctuation, how to write an effective sentence and paragraph while learning about the writing process itself.  All writing will be maintained in a writer's Portfolio, which will be shared with parents at conferences and then taken home at the end of the year as a record of the student's writing growth.

  Math                   

  8/30/2013: We will jump right into the first Investigations Unit on the third day of school. Homework will be posted below as assigned. If you should need some assistance when helping your child in math, links to math websites are posted. Students have accounts at the IXL website and may practice skills on their own to increase their knowledge base. Your child should know their password. Encourage your child to explore the math cites.  There are games, puzzles and activities which will help students throughout their elementary years.

  Health                                            

  8/30/13: We have several units in health, including nutrition & physical activity, safety, social & emotional health, personal health & wellness, and the health implications of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. We will begin with the unit concerning social & emotional health. Students will learn through our new OLWEUS program and our Circle of Friends about bullying, how to stand up for ourselves and others, the power of one and the power of sticking together as friends.
